Blue Tears

Blue Tears phenomenon was first sighed and captured by local photography enthusiast Albert Song at Trusan Beach in Bekenu on September 2015.

The Blue Tears phenomenon can be seen at Miri beaches particularly at Tusan beach but, also be sighted along the city’s coastline like Lutong Beach, Piasau Boat Club beach, Luak Esplanade Beach, Beach Republic, Brighton Beach of Taman Selera and Beraya Beach.

This rare phenomenon which can only be found in certain places in the world such as the Matsu Islands of Taiwan, Vaadhoo Beach on the island of Maldives and coastal beaches in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and Australia.

This phenomenon cause the beaches looked like ethereal blue neon light at night. It was caused by the bioluminescence of plankton called 'dinoflagellates', which triggers glowing neon blue bioluminescence as their defence mechanism.

The so-called blue glow is said to become brighter during warmer weather, thus Miri has all the factors that allow us here to enjoy the beautiful and captivating scene for free. This phenomenon most likely to appears around September and might last through December.
