Foods

Miri has some of the most exquisite bird-nests in the country, with the best quality ones costing some RM5,000 per kg.

Some of the best Malay food, Smokehouse

Marudi Kueh Tiaw, Kueh Chap, Sarawak Laksa, Kolok Mee, Cincaluk Manis, Bario Rice, Kek Lapis, super-sweet Sarawak Pineapples and the Batu Niah durians can be found here.

Despite the pace of development, tasty hawker food is affordably priced – a bowl of kolo mee or Sarawak laksa costs around RM3 to RM4, depending on portion sizes and location.

Food choices have become more diverse over the years, with cafes offering dishes ranging from Cantonese dim sum (small snack), bak kut teh (pork rib soup dish) to Italian fare.

Sago Worms
Sago trees were once considered the bread and butter of the Melanau people so although not exactly common, these protein-rich sago worms are still considered a yummy delicacy among native Sarawakians.

To eat the live worm you have remove worm’s head, many said it tasted like chicken. We recommend that you get the cooked /dried ones too. You can some time find it in local tabu or market.

Kueh Chap
Mainly served with pig offal’s.

Kompia
Kompia is Foochow food, a type of bun sprinkled with sesame seeds and traditionally baked in a large urn. This durable buns were once the food of soldiers who would string them around their waists as they marched.

Kompia are easily found in coffee-shops and can be had soft, fresh from the oven or fried and stuffed with stewed pork.

Tutu Fish
The fish is smooth, soft & a bit of sweetness.

Kek Lapis (Layer Cake)
Like the Lamington to Australia or the Victoria Sponge to Great Britain, the words kek lapis have become synonymous with Sarawak.

What initially started out as a relatively simple, two-toned multilayered cake has evolved and you can now find kek lapis in all colors and designs with many flavours.
